Screening tests
Your due date is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual cycle.
If there is any uncertainty about this an early ultrasound scan called a dating scan is done to determine accurate gestational age and give you a due date.
A blood test together with a STD screening is also performed early in pregnancy.
First Trimester Screening (FTS)
Once gestational age is established the First Trimester Screening Test can be discussed with you and your partner.
This needs to be completed by 13weeks + 5days.
The First Trimester screening consists of a blood test and an Ultrasound scan.
The risk ratio for Down syndrome is worked out by including all of the risk factors and gives an adjusted risk ratio for Down syndrome.
If the risk is considered high further diagnostic testing is recommended.
